Bikpek
Design strategy as a mean to make an idea feasible.Behavioral psychology as a mean to make an idea viable.
The Challenge:
A group of Brazilian sports journalists came to us with a goal of creating a website that would educate Brazilian audiences about the Olympics, including its history, sporting events, and famous athletes. Ahead of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, there were few reliable online sources of this information written in Portuguese and designed with Brazilian audiences in mind. Our task was to create a brand and deliver a website that would connect with journalists and Brazilian sports enthusiasts.

How we did it:
The Creative Director and I guided the journalists through the brand ideation process. We came up with a unique name that pays homage to two extraordinary athletes in history: long-distance runners Abebe Bikila and Emil Zatopek.
Bikpek’s creators had a low budget, so I proposed, planned and executed a successful crowdfunding campaign for the project, in which 159% of the fundraising goal was met in two months.

To successfully execute the campaign, we collected donors’ behavioral information and then translated that data into tailored messages on social media that drove more donations for the project. A “how to donate” tutorial was also developed to address pains points around the donation process; it increased conversations on the crowdfunding platform and made foreign donations possible.

To build Bikpek's information architecture, I performed an assessment of content types, including charts, posts, evergreen content, athletes, and Olympic sports categories. Using the assessment as a guide, I laid out a site development plan.

Alongside the creative director, I designed the Bikpek brand identity and created the UI and wireframes. Once the branding and design were in place, I guided the developer in the coding of the Bikpek website from start to finish.
I designed the interface and set the WordPress development environment using Sage, Gulp, Bower, SASS, Bootstrap, and GitHub.
I customized the WP dashboard and provided the editors with custom drag and drop UI blocks using WPBakery Page Builder API.
Throughout the project, the journalists were kept close to the design process with frequent feedback cycles. They learned about user experience, SEO, and project management too. In the end, the site launched in time for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Bikpek received favorable sports media attention during the Games.
